Here is a primitive scheme of wind camera's idea. It's actually just very basic
conception and very beginning. Let's make it more inventive and complex.
The basic principle is simple use of the wind as fundamental driver
of audio / visual / other apparatus. I was already experimenting with time,
its differences and rhythm and hidden meshes in the image, outside of the camera.
Behind the window, in a closeness of our views and another endurance there is
a different time and persistence and movement.
So let's use the wind instead of a crank of the movie camera. Swap the old drive
with easy cameras such as ordinary webcam or perhaps a camera chip. With all the new
mechanism to experiment and develop it further. Similar way, I'd to work with sound
in time and space. In the beginning simple use of webcam, arduino, anemometer, computer
and some software (Pure data, processing, max msp) Later on maybe some more
comprehensive and better construction built camera unit. Using intensity of the wind
and direction for different frame rate and later to other parameters.
(color planes, matrix structure etc…)
I found some parallel in Kurt Ralske's thoughts and experiments, “On temporality” (1)
I am also skeptical about dogma of the classical representation of time sequences
in standard number of frames per second. Therefore and also because of other causes
I'd like to escape from a consumer network of standardized technical apparatus dictating
its own aesthetics and unified editing and compositional software mummification filmed
material into one-way, linear compositions. In the “wind” then I see a fundamental
driver and also strong reflection of natural surroundings. What I also realized,
is the metaphor for an alternative time, the variability and unsuitability of events
in it and huge reserve of our perception.
I'd like to use Wind movies for several purposes. Also for multichannel installation
simulating the spatial draft of the wind with interconnection of nonlinear videos.
Small anemometer in front of the dominant projection can change the whole inner mechanism
of whole installation. It can exchange non linearity to linearity and it can spirit the space
with grandiose stream of sounds and images based on stream of wind data and manual control
of local anemometer.
Some background
During the last months I was interested in different time hidden in small natural phenomena. I found out that a classical “frame rate” driving the time in all types of ordinary, monotone image sequences or video, is not crucial for me anymore. So I started to experiment with time and images and attempt to find some hints directly in the other side of apparatus.
I discovered different time, alternative rhythm in sequence directed by birds in the picture…
I was experimenting a lot with car traffic in Prague. The city is completely overfilled by cars and in the centre. I was recording processed videos for many hours to prove how traffic situation affects the environment. It is a scary how it reduces the time.
PRE*SENT

“Pre*sent” is a in a way continuation of previous project with Guy van Belle “Pollution Art Kit” (1) The heart is a sensory tool APK extended by a small camera and mini computer. Pre*sent is not just a tool for retrieving data from the environment. Pre*sent is a magic box. Complex device that analyzes the environment around itself and separately acquires video and audio material. Is very sensitive to light, heat, humidity, loud surroundings etc. Therefore it perceives the sensitive atmosphere of the place where it is located. Its sensors, senses reflect the nature of the site-specific images and sounds. In the memory there are many processes and settings that determine at what point and how Pre*sent acquiring audiovisual material. This saves memory and creates a unique diary recordings.
Pre*sent I will send to my friends for some time around the world. In the audiovisual diary and write plenty of exceptional experiences for exceptional places. The person who will receive Pre*sent will have just one way of control the device. If he will be impressed with something that comes in an extraordinary moment, he will be able to press the button that changes the whole system / settings. The only button on the system transforms the whole situation.
