Els Van Riel

Lives and works in Brussels. She makes 16mm- and video- films and installations, and moving images going along with contemporary music.

TIK contribution:
I consider film as a recipient for time. I use the moving image technique as a container for some very precise details out of a piece of time. I use cameras to hunt down and capture these pieces. In a way that I can examine them, that I can explore the details from various points of view, that I can compare them with similar synchronized pieces. Purpose is to allow them, in a different construction, to be perceived as something new.

During the TIK days in Brussels I will try out the first set-ups for two new 16mm film-installations:

just one fall
just one fall, 16mm installation by Els Van Riel

JUST ONE FALL is based on the question whether it is possible to see the actual falling of an apple from a tree. My believes are that nobody actually ever did - keep on watching an apple hanging on a tree's branch until it fell to the ground.
I did. I took the time and watched it happen. And to prove it, I filmed it. And to make sure I covered all the bases, I used two synchronized cameras.
To install both 16mm film-images in synch, I needed to contruct a MAX patch, that with the help of the Arduino hardware controls the projectors' motors.
One push-button switch ignites the system.

CONGRES CLOCK is based on an ongoing game I play with myself.
In the train station Brussel Congres in the centre of the city, the old railway clocks with a 'real' seconds hand are still in use. These seconds hands, at the moment they reach the 12-zero point, falter. They stay still for almost two seconds.
In my mind, watching this, time itself stops, as if it hesitates. As if time has to take a decision. As if it is up to time to decide if it wants to continue or not.
In the station of Brussel Congres this magical decision is made every single minute of every single day. And every time I pass by, whether my train stops or not, I am ready for it. I attempt to see the clocks at the very moment of this precise time-discontinuity.
And when I do catch it, it makes my day.

(In history, the division of the world in time zones is linked to the invention and the development of the railway and train travel)
