How to Organize a Birthday Party. The Day Before. Preparations Only!
Okno decided this year to have all preparations ready, and then to go to a different place to party.
Can we visit you the day after?
Step 1: Pick a theme.
Time Inventor's Kabinet TIK will try to test drive its wind clock server TAK
Step 2: Get invitations.
This year we would like to invite all the TIK-artists to contribute something for Art's 1.000.049th Birthday.
If you are not a TIK artist you can be it by participating now. See the URL below.
Step 3: Make decorations.
Annemie will explain why bees don't sleep in winter and Luea will show you around the garden.
That is the best decoration, and more is ugly.
Step 4: Plan some games.
Balt will sent the brand new wind time server TAK on its maiden trip.
All wind artists will try to connect and make something nice out of it.
Information to follow here soon: see the url below.
See also there for last minute info on connection possibilities.
And if you think time is too short? What happened of good old live coding and the shock of the new?
Step 5: Plan the party food.
We won't make a 3D Dinosaur Birthday Cake. Radka will make the best Babovka Cake in the world!!!
Step 6: Plan the party drinks.
Something special?
Step 7: Pretend You Are Zen when You Are Really Stressed Out.

On a different soil. Growth in art, society and culture.
An international conference, organized within the framework of the project TIK – Time Inventors’ Kabinet, and as an accompanying program of Science and Technology Week 2011.
Thursday November 10. Utopia of the garden. Urban and rural gardens and today’s green utopias.
Could one say that art degenerates as it approaches gardening? (Robert Smithson – A Sedimentation of the Mind: Earth Projects, 1968)
The aim of the conference is to look at the changing approaches to the soil, and the subjects of growth and growing in society, culture and art, in urban and rural contexts. At the same time, we try to challenge the simplyfiying Medical transcription concepts of nature and natural, as presented in the arts. It is often in the arts though, where the various influential phantasies concerning nature emerge.
We want to confront artistic approaches with views by ecologists, biologists, eco-activists, economists, non profit organizations and foundations, about subjects like: (city) gardening and agriculture, transformation of city flora and fauna, relationship between urban and rural, philosophies of the garden, sustainability of cities and villages, long-term growth in economics (participatory economics, economical de-growth, natural capitalism etc.).
Artists often comment on the dissolving of the natural, cultural, and technological. Artistic approaches are often used as a political tool in the praxis of transforming the environment. Can aesthetics play a key role in the process. How and for what purposes are the newly river cruises in france emerging green spaces used by artists? To what extend are visions of the cities-as-gardens and its inhabitants in the roles of gardeners, just another utopian phantasy? How do the actual city forms of gardening look like: green spaces with open access (open greens), guerilla gardening, rooftop or vertical gardens, (so called) beautifying alliances. How are the permacultural processes reflected in the city planning? What are the most inspiring models of ecological towns and villages?
Friday November 11. In the wind. Art of the Ecological Time.
Discussions about ecological time, slow food, growth and de-growth. Presentation of art projects – artists as gardeners, beekeepers, fruiters, farmers, growers, mushroom pickers, cooks, herbalists, barometers and indicators of pollution…
7: 30 PM wind clock concert Re:wind time.
Thursday 10 > Sunday 13. Exhibition. Where the wind blows.
The exhibition is focused on the artworks, using the Eminem quotes natural processes. It will present the installations, using the wind energy, The Hanging Garden, using DIY hydrophonic system, open greens databases, laundry clocks and other projects.

STREAM FRIDAY, 18th of March @ 18:00: http://stream.wishion.com:8000/tik.ogv
Second round of TIK Radio research and production workshops. This time we deal with content (see also our however preliminary TIKr content workshop programme - that is of course now transformed according to our work in progress). After discussing several core topics and methodologies we are going today into trial mode of our developed ideas.
Within this framework, Verena is developing further the Time Bending Clock (TBC) with further entries in the TIME BENDING CLOCK WORK's encyclopedia.
Besides that our discussions are continuing … and we are also heading into update: meanwhile went into radio production. Moreover, expect some nice TIKky overall concept and format for our ongoing TIK Radio transmissions.
On Fri, March 19 we'll also do a nice little live TIK radio show that will be streamed as well, so you can join us!
Stay tuned - more detailed reports will follow …
Here they are again: Jan Gerber and Sebastian Luettger (0x2620.org, Berlin) and Sanjay Bhangar (CAMP, Bombay).
The goal of the second padma-workshop (feb.21-feb26) is :
1. install pan.do/ra, the more performant version of padma
2. refine some of the features we started working on during the first workshop (november 2010)
- the padma essays http://padmatexts.okno.be/
- the padma playlist http://padma.okno.be/playlist
Further on, we continue to research how we can use padma as a tool for creative writing and documenting collaborative processes as TIK - starting from different theoretical approaches for writing though media files, as e.g. the grounded theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grounded_theory)
We also research how padma can be embedded in or linked to other applications, as there are blender, pd, drupal, … to name some.
padma workshop dates:
- 22 till 26 november 2010 @ NADINE padma
- 21 till 26 februari 2011 @ OKNO http://timeinventorskabinet.org/wiki/doku.php/padma?&#padma_workshop_part02-february_2011
updates on padma and playlists (excerpts from the padma newsletter, 29.07.2011)
This workshop is aimed at working out a framework and methods to use our TIKs as input for visuals creation.
The idea is that the pieces we'll show during the exhibition are connected in some way together and work in synch, showing a coherent altered reality in the exhibition space.

a workshop about a hypothetical content, method and style for new ecological media writing today.
17-19 November 2010 @ OKNO - Brussels
In a concise 3-day program, we try to lay the foundations for a common style in treating the TIK themes and materials. Conform to the purpose of the 2-year project, and its bottom-up but collaborative strategies, we deal with the several blind spots that are still open, for thinking about a changed creative output in any media form: text, code, image, sound, word,…
The real subject of workshops is closely related to the TIK project scheme and deals with:
- the available documentation of the previous events and activities
- the representation and creative media writing throughout the project
- the outline of a common strategy for dealing with artistic research currently
- the content of the future conferences and publications
Daily we organize 5 short and to-the-point 1-hour sessions: working scheme, theoretical intro, practical exercises, evaluation/aftertalk and online reviewing. The themes of the planned days are as following:
12.11.2010 19h: Preliminary online preparation: a TIK chat logs here : 20101012chat
17.11.2010 11h: TIK WRITING OKNO brussels : Introduction, and the TIK-methodology of writing with all-media
18.11.2010 11h: TIK WRITING OKNO brussels : Aestetical, and stylistic considerations of TIK-writing with media
19.11.2010 11h: TIK WRITING OKNO brussels : From papers to abstractions, or how TIK-writing can make media
All further communication about the workshop will be done initially over the clocks list [http://okno.be/mailman/listinfo/clocks]
Tic [pronounced: tik] = a habitual spasmodic contraction of the muscles; origin early 19th cent., from Italian “ticchio”
Please let us know via the list if you will be present in Brussels - we can arrange catering and accomodation.

Some notes Els van Riel
During the TIK-project we will organise a 'further development workshop' on padma, led by its conceptors: Jan Gerber and Sebastian Luettger (0x2620.org, Berlin) and Sanjay Bhangar (CAMP, Bombay).
The aim of the workshop is :
1. research how we can use padma as a tool for creative writing and documenting collaborative processes as TIK - starting from different theoretical approaches for writing though media files, as e.g. the grounded theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grounded_theory)
2. to research how padma can be embedded in or linked to other applications, as there are blender, pd, drupal, … to name some.
3. work on specific features in padma, to make it possible tu use padma as a 'stand alone, realtime installation/documentation' project — (e.g. automatic editing based on keywords …) namely the time machine.
padma workshop dates:
- 22 till 26 november 2010 @ NADINE padma
- 21 till 25 februari 2011 @ OKNO
What are ways to start thinking about pulling material out of pad.ma? From the onset, pad.ma has had an API (documented at http://wiki.pad.ma/wiki/API), a programming interface that allows you to pull out videos, perform searches, seek to exact time-codes in any video, fetch transcript and map data, and display all this however you please. Also Pad.ma's General Public License (PGPL, http://pad.ma/license) is designed specifically for the reuse of the material on pad.ma. Through the experience of running the archive, there have been various imaginations of multiple and layered forms of time-based annotation over video, including for: pedagogical tools for learning and discussion; presentation tools that combine text and video in new ways, essays and other writing formats enabled by rich and context-specific media.
At this workshop, we hope to explore some of content/technical ideas to annotate video on the web, and new qualities for videos (decomposting, automatic editing, …) as a result of online practices. We invite all TIK-collaborators to participate. Please upload your TIK video material, texts and/or software that, combined with existing materials and tools in pad.ma, can become innovative kinds of “output”, or new forms. These would also then feedback into the archive, and how we imagine its future.
The outcome of the 2 linked workshops: WRITING TIKS and PADMA will be discussed at our first EKOCONFERENCE on friday november 26, afternoon/evening.
We kick off the TIK project with a three day event in Brussels. The participants will get together for discussions, presentations and working sessions.

In July 2010, OKNO Brussels, ESC Graz and COL-ME Bratislava will start a joint 2-year long project called Time Inventors' Kabinet. The idea is to rethink the way we are perceiving time, relate it to ecological concepts, and see what the impact could be on creating media art works.
For further information on the TIK project, we provide here an abridged Introduction to the "Time Inventors' Kabinet" [TIK]".
And now, let's jump into the “Prelude to another Time” program or schedule…
